A Literature and Arts Exploration of Flatland
In this four-week arts-centered literature study, students will read Flatland outside of class and gather each week to discuss its ideas, themes, and implications. Alongside the novel, students will encounter Plato's Allegory of the Cave, exploring the remarkable parallels between these two enduring stories of perception, reality, and understanding. Together, they invite students to think critically and consider how human beings make sense of the world around them.
Discussion is only part of the journey. Each class will include hands-on artistic exploration using conventional media such as paint, collage, drawing, and mixed media. Rather than illustrating the story, students will use art as a tool for processing meaning, impact, and personal response. Through conversation, creative experimentation, and a final synthesis project, students will explore the central question that emerges in the dialogue between Flatland and Plato.
